A 68th. minute Pablo Bastianini goal was enough to give Yeovil their first win of the campaign up at Hartlepool United yesterday.

After the long trip to the League's most Northerly outpost Gary Johnson changed his formation to a more safety first 4-5-1 whilst at the same time trying not to abandon his attacking instincts.

With ten of the players choosing to fly up to Newcastle the majority of the squad started feeling fresh and ready for the fight and they certainly needed that freshness as 'Pool came straight out of the blocks putting Yeovil under immense early pressure.

Celebrations1

As early as the second minute Carl Jones had a chance but shot just wide for the home side after Weale had failed to hang onto a Humphreys cross.

Next it was Boyd nipping in but Weale had the measure of this effort.

Michael Proctor was next to try his luck as Hartlepool piled forward but his shot went just wide after fizzing across the face of the Yeovil goal.

It really was the Alamo back there and Liam Fontaine was certainly have a busy debut at the back along with Terry Skiverton.

Clarke saw a header go just wide but the longer the home side went without a goal so Yeovil's confidence grew and Terry Skiverton was unlucky to see a header go just over the 'Pools keeper's bar.

With Yeovil now far more in the game, the strong running of Alvarez was beginning to worry the home defence and with Bastianini always a threat, the hardy few who had made the trip North from Yeovil were beginning to think this might just be the day.

When danger man Boyd went off just before half time with an injury after a clash with Chris Weale it was just another bonus for The Glovers with Boyd having been already identified as a threat on goal.

Johnson's experiment was certainly showing signs of working for with Hartlepool running out of ideas and the crowd beginning to get on their back Yeovil were becoming stronger very minute.

The second half was again very much a midfield battle but with the five in the middle for Yeovil having much more of the ball you could almost see the confidence draining from the Harleppol players.

Yeovil did have a scare though when 'Pool scored direct from a corner but the referee immediately blew up for a foul on Weale and the "goal" was chalked off.

As Yeovil started to control the game Bastianini and Alvarez were becoming more of a threat and when Luciano was bundled down on a promising looking run Yeovil grabbed the moment.

Lee Johnson took another one of his very quick free kicks and his accurate delivery was met powerfully by Bastianini's head and The Glovers were a goal up after 68 minutes.

Joy for all the green and whites but now the task was to hang on to the lead.

Luciano1

Twenty minutes can seem like a long time but on this occasion it seemed to pass very quickly such was Yeovil's control of the game at that point.

Hartlepool still continued to battle but with Fontaine and the rest of the Yeovil back four now in total command it was all to no avail.

Pablo1

When M.I.B. Drysdale found an extra 4 minutes I found the strain all too much and had to retire to read the Beano but I shouldn't have worried for Yeovil saw out the time without further real drama.

So a win at last, and up North as well. That's two jinx's broken in one day!! Now it's a question of kicking on and with a home match to come against Walsall, renewed confidence, and an easyJet flight laid on to take the players from Abbey Manor Park to the ground all the pieces are now in place for Yeovil to show what they can really do.

For all the doom and gloom merchants all I can say is "Ye of little faith!!"
