Following the disappointing stalemate with Bournemouth on Tuesday night, Huish Park welcomed out a changed Yeovil Town side for this game with Carlisle United.

The defence stayed the same with Mildenhall in goal operating behind a flat back four of Lindegaard, Skiverton, Forbes and Jones.

Russell Slade dispensed with the diamond formation in midfield, going back to a straight 4-4-2.

This saw Chris Cohen and Paul Terry in the centre, with David Poole on the right, and for his league debut Ishmael Welsh on the left wing.

The last change had Kevin James coming in for Matty Harrold up front, partnering Wayne Gray in the hunt for goals.

So perhaps a little bit of a risk for the manager, but after the disappointment of Tuesday, and in the search for the first win of the season, perhaps a required one.

As it tuned out it was a risk will taken, with Welsh voted the man of the match and scoring the winning goal in this good 2-1 win, plus Kevin James running his socks off on the forward line.

It was also nice to see Kevin Gall make his return to Huish Park after leaving the club during the summer, and it was refreshing to see the Somerset crowd not only cheer and clap him, but also sing his name.

So the game got started, and Welsh was immediately busy on the right wing, winning a corner in the first minute.  Cohen over hit it though, but intent was there for a good attacking display ahead.

Another Yeovil wide player, of a former type in Kevin Gall, showed the same intent in the 3rd minute, receiving the ball on the right of the Yeovil box and looping in a fine shot which went just over the bar.

The game was still settling down with no pattern really occurring.

Neither side were really taking hold of the game, though the Glovers were having the best of the play with Welsh, Poole, Cohen and Gray nice and busy.

Jones was also at times looking lively, with a great shot ,come cross, on 9 minutes that the keeper just got his hand to.

David Poole did the same thing a few minutes later from the right side, just hitting his effort wide.

Then on 17 minutes the breakthrough came, with what was a deserved goal.  Though the play was fairly even, the Glovers had been nosing in front for a few minutes.

Yeovil won a free kick on the right side, and Nathan Jones floated it into the box.

The Cumbrian's defence tried to clear, but couldn't get it away.  Wayne Gray tried to get to it too, but it eluded him, instead coming to the superb Chrissie Cohen who had the easy job of hitting it over the line from a few yards out.

Great move by the Glovers, and yes, a deserved lead!  1-0!

Yeovil looked lively now, with Welsh running well down the wing, Cohen and Terry controlling the midfield well and Wayne Gray and Kevin Jakes lively up front.

They were marginally on top and were worthy of their lead, but five minutes alter gaining it Carlisle managed to quieten the crowd by equalising.

Bridges won the ball in the centre and pushed it though to Kevin Gall in the box to sweep it past Mildenhall into the back of the net.

It had to be Gall didn't it!  A well taken goal though and with it the game was back level.  1-1.

Carlisle now started knocking the ball around nicely having the better of the play.  The Glovers were certainly worth their salt though and were still putting on some good attacks.

Welsh was growing in stature, as was Gray who was getting into some good positions in front of goal.

He went close on the half hour with an attempt on the right side, then again a few minutes later off a Welsh corner, hitting the ball just wide.

Carlisle were still dangerous too, and proved this well when Peter Murphy went hit a shot inches wide of the far post following a free kick, then Hawley received the ball in the centre from Bridges, turned well and belted one in which Mildenhall gratefully held.

With the half coming to it's conclusion, the Glovers had been increasing the tempo for a few minutes and were creating some good pressure, with some fine play from the likes of Gray, James, Welsh and Poole coming in and around the box.

The crowd were getting the tails up too, and with it you began to sense that another goal was a possibility.

To the delight of the Somerset crowd this came to fruition on 42 minutes when the lads scored a absolute peach!

The build up saw a little bit of luck, but there was no doubting the quality of the finish from a great prospect of a player.

The move started when Welsh brought the ball forward and tried a one two with Nathan Jones.

The return from Nathan was a little short though, but deflected off a defender back to Welsh just inside the area.

The former West Ham man took a deep breath, and lined his effort up perfectly, sending in a dipping shot, which went over the keeper's head and just under the cross bar and into the net.  Fantastic!

Huish Park exploded!!  The Glovers had the lead again!  2-1!!

Yeovil were on fire now and trampled over the opposition with some great attacks, and had the referee not blown for half time they may well have scored again, but in the end Carlisle went in for the break to lick their wounds just one goal down.

Yeovil were worthy of their lead, but in a game that still seemed to have goals in it, they would have to be diligent in the second half

Half Time - Yeovil Town: 2  Carlisle United: 1

Carlisle came out for the second period and knocked the ball around nicely, initially dominating the play, with Bridges, Hawley and Aranalde looking lively.

The Glovers were having their moments too and on 52 minutes could have increased their lead when Poole played a lovely ball down the right to James.

The loanee took it to the line and crossed beautifully to Welsh in acres of space coming into the box from the left, but the Londoner shot just wide.  Lovely move though.

The Cumbrians retorted with Hawley forcing Mildenhall into a good save on his line a minute later, with Wayne Gray finding himself just short of the ball at the opposite end soon after.

So it was fairly even, and with just a single goal lead you did feel that the Glovers would need to score more.

This they tried with some good pressure and some nice play from the likes of Gray, Welsh, James and Cohen.

And it was on Cohen who on 59 minutes played a lovely ball through to Poole to zoom into the area and send in a fine effort that Westwood did well to cope with.

The Glovers were well on top now, and on 63 minutes Welsh made a good run down the left to send a wicked ball into the box. The keeper and Gray rose together, with Westwood just about holding it.

On 65 minutes Jean-Paul Kalala was introduced to beef up the midfield, making his debut at the expense of Paul Terry.

Carlisle were still a threat though, with Bridges and Hawley seeming involved in most things, causing Skiverton and Forbes to have to be at their best to counteract.

celebration

The Glovers were still on top though, and still worthy of their lead.

The Gaffer appeared to feel that a big man was needed up front though, and bought on Matty Harrold for the tired looking Kevin James.

The Forest man had run his heart out and had definitely justified his inclusion.

This game still seemed to have more goals left in it, with both sides looking well capable of scoring.

It was also a highly entertaining gmatch that was often end-to-end play, and one which was keeping both sets of supporters in a hive of excitement.

lindy

On 86 minutes Lumsdon went close for Carlisle with a good shot from just inside the box, which Mildenhall gratefully caught, then Wayne Gray could have got on one for the Glovers when he broke brilliantly into the box, but he was tackled at the last to deny his second goal of the season.

With just minutes to go however the crowd sensed the victory and started some celebratory singing in the anticipation of three hard won points, the first triple of the season!

ishy cele

This had been a fine game, with some lovely play from both sides, but with football being the game that it is someone was always bound to miss out, and to the delight of the home crowd it was Carlisle United!

kevin james

This had been a good performance from a speedy and attack minded Yeovil Town, and in the end they set themselves up well for the trip to Tranmere next week with a good professional victory.
