Yeovil went into Saturday's game with Southend looking to make up for last weeks 3-0 defeat to Oldham. Russell Slade played a new look 4-3-3 formation that ultimately failed as Southend went on to inflict a 3-0 defeat to the Glovers.

Following the match Russell Slade said the result was a 'bitter blow' to his side that have only won one match in eleven. Slade also bemoaned his sides inability to get goals, "we can't get a goal for love nor money at the moment."

Yeovil started brightly with Andy Kirk testing Darryl Flahavan in the opening minute with a left footed shot.

Liam Bridcutt broke with the ball on the right wing and played a neat cross into Marvin Williams on the penalty spot who blasted the ball just wide of the Flahavan's left hand post.

Andy Kirk had another great chance when he ran onto a long ball from Mark Lynch had another left footed shot that hit the side netting.

In the 19th.minute assistant referee Eamonn Smith gave a bizarre throw in to Southend deep in their half when it seemed obvious that the ball came off of Shrimper's player Charlie Mulgrew.

From this throw in Southend pumped the ball to the other end of the pitch and a cross from Tommy Black was met by former Tottenham player Lee Barnard who placed the ball into the top corner of the goal.

A furious Lloyd Owusu was lucky to get away without punishment when he remonstrated fiercely with Mr Smith about his decision.

Southend built on their lead as Yeovil's new formation left them with a lack of bodies in their defending third.

Mark Gower's shot from outside the box was headed over by Terrell Forbes who was back in the side after an injury kept him out of the Glovers last three games.

Southend were close to making it two when Gower bundled the ball wide from a yard out following a skilful run by former Yeovil loanee James Walker.

In the 34th minute Yeovil conceded a harsh free kick by the 18-yard box. An unmarked Peter Clarke headed Charlie Mulgrew's dangerous cross in powerfully to double Southend's lead.

The second half closed to boo's from the far from happy Huish Park crowd directed towards the match officials and the teams lacklustre performance.

Yeovil emerged in the second half with the same team and same formation, with Russell Slade presumably wanting his side to push on and get a result.

The second half began slowly with neither side carving out any clear cut chances. A Liam Bridcutt free kick that looped just over Darryl Flahavan's goal was the closest Yeovil came.

Mark Lynch gave his side a scare by dallying on the ball in front of James Walker who would have been in on goal and Lynch's persistence not paid off.

An hour into the game, Mark Gower found himself free on the front post to head in a Simon Francis cross and make the score 3-0.

Glover's keeper Scott Flinders got a hand on the ball but could not keep the ball from going into the net.

Yeovil's first real chance of the second half fell to Andy Kirk who's volley was deflected over the bar after Lloyd Owusu's deft flick fell to him in the box.

The resulting corner led to captain Terry Skiverton heading the ball straight to Shrimper's keeper Flahavan who held on to the ball comfortably.

Yeovil threatened again in the 82nd minute as Andy Kirk's acrobatic volley fizzed inches over the bar.
